The Last Mayan Prophesy Activator for a responsible transformation of society. This is the role that has been handed down to me by the ‘abuelos ’ or grandfathers in the ancient tradition of Maya Shamanism. Their responsibility in the community over thousands of years ago is the same as it was today; to be a positive leader in action and in thought for their people, leading them in the right direction.
l have been an artist since I was three years old. But before I became a professional artist I studied Maya Shamanism very intensively under some of the greatest Guatemalan Shamans of this generation. The siblings Gerardo, Carlos, Denise and Lina Barrios, tata Manuel Mendoza form Santiago Atitlan, Carlos Alvarado and many others were and still are my mentors 16 years later, teaching me the Sacred Maya Path or ‘Saq Be.’
The Mayan tradition focuses on sustainability and in its purest and most spiritual form this translates as respect for Mother Earth. In the 21st Century the value has been lost in preservation as we engage in globalization and exploitation of natural resources. This is as evident as ever in our weakening global economy and climate change. The Maya have an ancient system that is still alive in my country and includes advances in astrology, the development of more of 20 different calendars, mathematics, agriculture, medicine, spirituality, language and writing systems, and architectural structures aligned to the cosmos. However, studying these ancient systems and participating in sacred fire ceremonies was not enough for me. What I sow by being a part of the Maya was the relevance in their beliefs to the 21st Century. So I picked up my paintbrush.
l have painted, through my Saq Be series, various important figures in the history of Guatemalan culture and politics. L have also painted central Mayan themes such as “Corazon del Cielo” and “Corazon de la Tierra” Heart of the Sky and Heart of the Earth — the birth of our 20 human energies (10 toes connected to the energy of the earth or telluric, and 10 fingers connected to the energy of sky or cosmos). For this show I have pointed d 216” X 300”, 260—day of the Sacred 2012 Mayan Cholquij calendar, or the human calendar. This calendar was created by the Maya based on the 20 human energies that connect us to the earth and sky, and the 13 important joints in a human body: 20 X 13 = 260 days. These 260 days represent nine months, or the period of gestation for a human baby.
